About Traditonal Forging of Japanese Swords
The traditional skills of the Seki Method of sword making have been inherited since the Kamakura era. The most exciting scene is that of a sword smith hitting an iron ingot, making a circle from the other side with a hammer. A big hammer held by a sword smith standing beside and a short hammer held by another sword smith sitting beside create a comfortable rhythm. The sound of fire and the flagrance of iron are sensed. By the repetition of hitting and folding the iron plate, the impurities are expelled and the hardness of the iron increases through the process of forging.
